About the Art and the Artist
One of the deepest rewards in creating art is making connections. With the folks who view my work, that’s my hope - that together we see the natural world and bear witness to it, for any of the myriad reasons that nature speaks to each of us...
Perhaps, you can see a part of yourself in the work, a quality within that resonates.
Or the piece evokes an emotion that strikes you.
Maybe you have a love for the flora and fauna depicted.
You may hold a keen belief in the importance of each little small thing in nature
Or perhaps you connect in a sense that isn’t easily translated into words. I understand.
And for the folks who give me the honor of taking my work home with them, I hope that all of our connections continue to resonate with you far into the future.
The Backstory
I’m a life-long resident of Florida and grew up along the central Gulf coast of the state. As a child, I had free reign to wander my grandparents' farm and ranch there. Those wanderings began a foundation of watching and observing the flora and fauna of the Gulf Coast and Southeast that now influence my art.
In my work, I heed a deep-rooted calling to bear witness to the native environment of the region that I know and love. I explore nature as a boundless well of subject matter and our relationships to nature as an entry point to addressing themes on boundaries, connections, sense of place, time, memory, and identity.
To create images, I look to the small stories and the special-ness of the creatures and the environments they rely on. Plying woods, backwaters, and even my own backyard, I raid a treasure chest of line, pattern, texture and form. A variety of printmaking techniques, including monotype, relief, collagraph, and intaglio, are employed to bring images to life. My mixed media work is enhanced with collage and drawing in graphite and colored pencil.
I hold a BA in visual arts from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida and a BA in English from the University of South Florida. I now reside in St. Augustine, Florida, where I continue with learning, exploring and pursuing my art.
Look for my work at the Butterfield Garage Gallery in St. Augustine.
